Chapter 28

“I WASN’T ABLE TO SEE good pictures of this one, or even very many at all,” Gwenn says as she begins unlocking the door to an apartment. She perfectly balances her weight on her crutch.

We step into what looks like a closet. Well, it’s the size of one, anyway.

As I watch her glance around, I can see she clearly hates it here already. It doesn’t seem to be as updated as she expected, but it also seems to be well within my true budget. We’ve only walked beyond the long but tiny kitchen into the living room that’s apparently also the dining room, office, and bedroom, when she turns to face me with her broker smile.

“What do you think?”

“Not sure. What would you tell me to do?”

“As your agent, I’d advise you to compare this unit and what it contains with the units you liked, and also to think about which place best fits your life.”

“And as my friend?”

She hesitates, but only for a second. “Don’t pick this one.”

I agree with my friend’s choice.

We slowly walk across the street to a different apartment complex. The sidewalks have been shoveled, but it still isn’t as easy to maneuver on them as Gwenn assumed since they don’t appear to have been salted. Just enough liquid from the slowly melting snow was enough to add some ice where it shouldn’t be.

“This complex has several types of units,” Gwenn tells me as we reach the first building. “I have two for you to see here, one in one building and one in another.”

Luckily, this place has an elevator, as the last one only had stairs. Of course, that wasn’t so bad having Gwenn lean her body against me when she needed help after a while—not that she really asked. It was more that I had to put myself close to her and let her do the rest.

“Now, this apartment is exactly like the one you’d be renting, only flipped. So the kitchen sink would be on the east wall instead of the west, and so on.”

It’s much ritzier here. I’m a little scared.

Gwenn acts as a guide through each room, highlighting not only the biggest selling points but also what she, as my friend, thinks I should know. “I obviously have to tell prospective buyers and renters any key issues with the houses or apartments, but I’d hate for you to choose something you’ll regret. Remorse often happens when someone is in a rush or doesn’t know as much about the property as they should.”

“And when did you decide to tell me about all the flaws?” I ask, not meaning to put her on the spot, but also understanding that she didn’t do this with the first few we saw.

She blushes. “When you made it clear that you care about what I think.”

There isn’t anything else for me to say. She said exactly what I wanted to hear. I leave it at that, content with this knowledge. I’d be happy as hell if not for the lie that started this all.
